Heinsburg Community Club will celebrate 50 years as a registered society this Saturday with an evening open house showcasing the club’s history and honouring its founders. “We have five of the founding members able to attend,” Marjorie Scott says. “Three of them, Alice Gregor, Colleen and Babe Sharkey, are still active with the club.” Scott says the club has invited the original people or representatives of their families to attend this “celebration of 50 years of cooperative effort. We’re very proud of what has been accomplished over the years.”
One of the club’s major accomplishments has been its hall, which had been started before the incorporation took place. “There was one function before the roof was even on,” Scott says. She adds that the hall has grown to its present size in seven stages, “and we’re just completing another renovation, with a larger deck and garden doors for the seniors’ area.”
What started in 1959 as a small community hall has become, over the past five decades, “a pretty fancy facility,’ Scott says. “It has almost everything a person could need.”
The now-spacious hall is likely to be filled to capacity Aug. 29, when current and past members come back to enjoy a walk down memory lane, Heinsburg style, followed by some of the good country entertainment that packs the hall on a regular basis.
The community club also is working on a history book project, which started when several members started reading through the old club meeting minute books and decided the activities the club has undertaken over the years should be saved for posterity. When invitations to the celebration were sent out this spring, a request was also made for photos and memories to be included in the book.
